Phil Ivey learned about poker from his grandfather when he was just 8 years old. His grandfather was however no ordinary teacher as he made it very difficult for his grandson to learn. He even hid the cards, just to teach the young boy about the dangers of gambling. However, instead of extinguishing the desire to play in his grandson, he ignited a love of poker, which has followed Phil Ivey to this day.
When he was a teenager Phil told everyone what he wanted to be when he was older and had to provide for himself: a professional gambler. His actual career started small, when he was 16 years old, which is the first time he played poker involving money.
When Phil Ivey turned 18, he got himself a fake ID, which he used to get into the different casinos in Atlantic City. The poker tables were so tempting that he could not keep away. The first few years he lost more than he won, but Phil continued regardless as he saw it as essential training to become a better poker player.
Phil Ivey wanted to be a professional gambler and all education costs money in one way or another. It was during these first few years of his gambling career that he actually learned to master all the different types of poker to a relatively high level. He gradually became a very able all-round poker player and was relatively good both in limit, no limit, texas, stud, Omaha and tournament games.
In the year 2000 Phil Iver won his first WSOP bracelet in one of the minor WSOP events. His actual breakthrough year came in 2002, when he won a whole three events. He won in 3 different poker types. 2 of them were Seven Card Stud and Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo.
Phil currently lives in Las Vegas, where he has become part of the furniture at the high limit tables at the Bellagio hotel casino. He often shares a table with other poker celebs such as Doyle Brunson, Jennifer Harman and Chip Reese.
So when you go to Las Vegas, go past the casino at the Bellagio – Phil Ivey is always ready for a game of poker. This is entirely at your own risk however – as the man is super talented and many other poker players that play at his level believe him to be the world’s best all-round poker player today.
